It seems that the hibernate and sleep commands put the system into the same low power state. My understanding is that the laptop will not wake up from hibernate, but it does wake up from hibernate to perform a scheduled task. When I was using sleep I had the wake timers enabled to allow the laptop to wake to run scheduled backup tasks.
I have started to hibernate the laptop when I'm not using it, instead of using sleep, to save battery power.
